USA – Rogerson Clematis Garden
One of the largest collections of clematis in the USA is located in the Portland area in Oregon, USA. The clematis are displayed in a residential setting, providing the opportunity to show how well they combine with other plants.
The garden is well worth a visit and is open every day from 8:00 am to dusk. The greenhouse (staffed with volunteers) is open Fridays 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and the 4th Saturday of the month 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. There is always something to see even in winter.
Members of the International Clematis Society who visited Portland, Oregon, USA in 2010 or 2001 with the Society can’t fail to remember the Clematis Collection of Brewster Rogerson. The range of cultivars and loving care that each had obviously received was very impressive.
Started in 1978 with just sixty plants it then contained 900 plants representing over 500 different cultivars. To safeguard its future, it was moved in 2005 to a new location at Luscher Farm in West Linn, a neighboring suburb to Lake Oswego in Oregon, USA.
The maintenance and upkeep of such a collection is a very significant task that cannot but get more burdensome with age. Recognizing the importance of this collection, Brewster and some of the members of the Pacific Northwest Clematis Society formed the “Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection”. This has now transformed into the Rogerson Clematis Garden. For further information, including opening hours, what’s in bloom, events, please see http://www.rogersonclematiscollection.org.
